Symptoms of hardening of the arteries can range from no symptoms up to heart attack or stroke depending on the location.1 It may occur in the heart, brain, legs, pelvis, arms, or kidneys.2 Blood clots, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, heart failure, high blood pressure, aneurysms, and renal failure are common symptoms associated with this condition.3 Hardening of the arteries is a progressive condition that may not be reversible. Lifestyle changes, medications, angioplasty, and surgery are treatment options available.1

- Chest pain, dizziness, arrhythmia, fatigue, and shortness of breath are common symptoms of atherosclerosis affecting the coronary arteries.2
- When hardening of the arteries affects the arteries leading to the brain, sudden numbness, lethargy, severe headaches, loss of balance, loss of coordination, and weakness can occur. This type of condition commonly affects one side of the body.2
