Research Notes on Hand Washing for Disease Prevention
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hand washing is the "most important way of preventing the spread of disease."1 Hand washing removes bacteria from the skin that could be harmful. Germs that cause a cold or the flu can be eliminated by washing the hands.2
Fast Facts:
- Infectious diarrhea can spread from hand-to-hand contact.3
- Hands should be washed with soap and warm water for a minimum of 15 to 20 seconds.3
- Hands should be washed before preparing food and eating, after using the toilet, touching animals, after coughing, sneezing or blowing the nose, and after caring for sick people.2
