Research Notes on Hamstring Pull
Pulled hamstrings are the tears of the hamstring muscle fibers usually due to excessive force by overstretching and overcontracting.1 2The symptoms are readily apparent like pain, tenderness and a snapping sensation at the back of the thigh.3 Depending on the severity of the injury, pulled hamstrings usually takes two to six weeks to return to its healthy state. Surgical repair may be needed for significant tears, and for mild strains. Treatment includes a combination of rest, gentle stretching of the thigh and hip, and strengthening exercises.4
Fast Facts:
- There is a high risk of recurrence without proper treatment and rehabilitation.5
- It commonly among physically-active individuals.5
