Research Notes on Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression


The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression is a 21-question questionnaire that is used to measure the severity of a person's depression.1 It is also known as the Hamilton Depression Scale or HAMD.2 Although the scale was introduced over 60 years ago, it is still the most commonly used scale in measuring depression symptoms.3 The scale focuses on symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, and weight loss.4

  • The scale has received criticism from some in the medical community that the test may be flawed in its accuracy.1
  • Due to the nature of the questions asked, the test can run at a minimum of 30 minutes.5
  • The test may be used in conjunction with other tests such as the Beck Depression Inventory and the Raskin Depression Rating Scale.1
  • Another well known test is the Burns Depression Inventory test.
