Research Notes on Haldol and Pregnancy
Haldol, the brand name of the generic drug haloperidol, should only be used during pregnancy if the benefit to the mother clearly outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.1 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Haldol as a Category C drug, meaning the effects of the drug on a developing fetus have not been clearly established.2 Haldol is commonly prescribed to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Tourette's syndrome, psychosis, and has been used to treat severe nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy treatment.3
Fast Facts:
- Research studies conducted with pregnant rats showed Haldol to increase the risk of miscarriage and newborn death. There have been no well controlled studies performed on pregnant women.2
- Haldol is secreted in human breast milk in a significant amount; breastfeeding women are not advised to use Haldol.4
- Speak with your physician if you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking Haldol. Do not abruptly stop taking your medication.5
