Research Notes on Hydrocephalus Treatment
The most common treatment for hydrocephalus is the surgical placement of a shunt. A shunt allows fluid to drain to the heart or abdomen. Ventriculostomy is another option in some cases. In this procedure a hole is made in the bottom of one of the ventricles of the brain. This allows cerebrospinal fluid to flow to the bottom of the brain where it can be absorbed.1
Fast Facts:
- A shunt is generally needed for life.1
- As a child grows, surgery is generally needed to insert longer tubing for a shunt.1
- If shunt tubing becomes blocked or infected a surgical revision may have to be done.1
