Research Notes on HIV Symptoms
It is important to be aware of HIV as soon as possible to begin treatment and to prevent spreading it to others. Early HIV often has no symptoms, so testing is highly recommended for those with multiple sex partners or other high-risk behaviors.
Fast Facts:
- A short flu-like illness is common several weeks after infection.1
- Early symptoms may include: fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, rash and diarrhea.2
- Later symptoms can be mild infections or chronic symptoms like swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, weight loss, fever, cough and shortness of breath.1
- As more serious symptoms develop, often more than 10 years after infection, the disease may eventually progress to AIDS.1
