Research Notes on HIV Medications
There are a number of drugs that have been approved for the treatment of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS. These medications fall into a number of different groups, or "classes.".1 Medications used to treat HIV are called highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART). HAART usually includes a combination of three or more HIV medications, often including a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTIs) or a protease inhibitor (PI) plus two nucleoside or nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).2
Fast Facts:
- Treatment focuses on achieving the maximum suppression of symptoms for as long as possible.3
- NRTIs were the first antiretroviral drugs to be developed.3
- Its is always important to take the medications exactly as prescribed and not to change or stop the medications without first speaking with your physician.4
