Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections. Eventually most HIV-infected individuals develop AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).
