Research Notes on HIV
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the body's natural defense system, the immune system. If the immune system becomes weakened, the body has difficulty fighting off other diseases. The last stage of an HIV infection is acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).1
Fast Facts:
- It is estimated that around 39.4 million people worldwide have HIV.2
- HIV is transmitted through sexual contact (semen and vaginal secretions), blood and blood products (blood transfusions), accidental needle sticks, needle sharing, transmission from mother to child during birth or breastfeeding, and in rare cases in organ and tissue transplants.3
- HIV is diagnosed through blood tests or oral mucus tests.4
