Research Notes on HIPAA
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 was passed to protect the privacy of patients, such as access to their health care records.
Fast Facts:
- HIPAA protects against health care fraud and abuse by establishing standards for the use of health care information
- HIPAA provides an option for employees to maintain their health insurance when they move to a different job, and to receive health benefits under a health insurance provider regardless of any preexisting condition.
- HIPAA covered entities -- such as doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers -- are required to have a unique National Provider Identifier (NPI) number to help avoid any fraudulent electronic transactions.
