Research Notes on HER2
HER2, or human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 is a type of protein found on the cells of breast cancer. When HER2 is altered and extra HER2 protein receptors are made, it causes increased cell growth and reproduction, often creating more aggressive breast cancer cells. HER2 positive breast cancer is not as responsive to hormone treatment as normal breast cancer.1
Fast Facts:
- New treatments are now available for HER2 positive breast cancer.2
- Trastuzumab (Herceptin) is a drug which kills HER2 cancer cells and is shown to reduce the risk of recurrance.
- Herceptin side effects can include congestive heart failure.2
- Lapatinib (Tykerb) is a drug that kills HER2 cancer cells and is used along with chemotherapy.2
