Research Notes on H1N1 Virus
The H1N1 virus, recently referred to as "swine flu," is a respiratory disease caused by influenza type A.1 The H1N1 flu can be transmitted to humans by direct contact with someone already infected, or through coughing and sneezing. The H1N1 virus is not transmitted by consuming pork products.2
Fast Facts:
- Symptoms include fever, coughing, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, appetite loss, and runny nose.
- H1N1 flu can be potentially fatal.2
- Currently there are no vaccines for the H1N1 virus, but it is hoped that one will be available by September of 2009.3
- To avoid getting this virus you should wash your hands frequently.2
- Medications such as oseltamivir or zanamivir are used to treat the H1N1 virus.2
- The H1N1 virus that causes swine flu is a derivative of the H1N1 virus that caused the 1918 flu pandemic.4
