Research Notes on Gynecologic Cancers
Gynecologic cancer is a group classification for cancers that affect the female reproductive tract or region. This includes uterine cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer and fallopian tube cancer. These cancers have different causes, some as yet uncertain, including human papilloma virus (HPV) and genetics.
Fast Facts:
- Uterine cancer is the 4th most common cancer in women, after breast, lung and colon cancers.
- Over 80,000 women are diagnosed with some kind of gynecologic cancer each year.
- If caught early, most cases of gynecologic cancer are treatable and survivable.
- Women should have yearly gynecologic exams, including a pap smear, and report any odd symptoms to their doctor as soon as possible.
- The most common types of treatments for gynecologic cancer are hysterectomy, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
