Research Notes on Guttate Psoriasis Diagnosis
Guttate psoriasis affects less than two percent of individuals with psoriasis and is more common in children and adults under thirty years of age.1 Diagnosis of guttate psoriasis includes medical history, examination of rash, and evidence of infection.2 Onset of symptoms generally occurs after a streptoccocal infection, upper respiratory infection, tonsillitis, or excessive stress.3
Fast Facts:
- Guttate psoriasis rashes are distinct. Generally covering the trunk of the body, they are small, red, teardrop lesions.1
- A blood test (antistreptolysin O) or throat culture may be performed to diagnose strep throat.4
- More than half of patients diagnosed with guttate psoriasis have an increased level of streptolysin-O in blood tests.1
- Cortisone cream, dandruff shampoos, lotions with coal tar, moisturizers, and retinoids are treatment options.5
