Guaifenesin belongs to a class of medications known as expectorants and is used to treat coughs associated with colds, bronchitis or similar lung infections.1 It helps to make a cough more productive by thinning the mucus in the air passages so it becomes easier to expel.1 This medication is not a cure and will not help to speed recovery; it merely relieves the symptoms of the affliction.1
