Research Notes on Growth Disorder
A growth disorder is an umbrella term for a range of problems that might be preventing growth in a child or infant. Diseases of the kidneys, heart, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, bones, or other body systems may affect growth. Other symptoms or physical signs in children with these illnesses usually give clues as to the disease causing the growth delay. However, poor growth may be the first sign of a problem in some of these conditions. Some of the examples of diseases that may effect growth are failure to thrive, endocrine diseases and Turner syndrome.1
Fast Facts:
- To pinpoint the cause of slow growth, the patient may be referred to an endocrinologist. 2
- Blood tests, urine tests and X-rays, and a MRI of the pituitary gland may be ordered to determine a diagnosis.2
- Symptoms of a growth disorder include slow weight gain, weight loss, slow height gain, slow head circumference gain or irritability.3
