Research Notes on Granuloma Inguinale

Granuloma inguinale is a sexually transmitted disease that has become an epidemic in many underdeveloped regions. Lesions occur at the place of contact, in the anal and genital areas. Rarely are the cervix or the vaginal wall affected. Small nodules appear and eventually burst, leaving open oozing sores.1

  • Patients with granuloma inguinale are also a high-risk group for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) transmission.2
  • Granuloma inguinale is spread primarily through heterosexual and male homosexual activity; however it can be spread through contact with human feces.2
  • Symptoms usually occur between 1 to 12 weeks after infection.
  • Antibiotics such as penicillin are used to treat granuloma inguinale.3
