Research Notes on Gram-Positive Bacteria
Bacteria are classified as positive or negative, depending upon whether they stain violet or pink. Gram-positive bacteria cell walls are thicker, so they retain more of the purple dye and iodine stain. There are six pathogenic gram-positive bacteria: Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, Clostridium, Corynebacterium, Listeria. They are found in various environments.
Fast Facts:
- Gram staining was developed by Hans Christian Gram, a 19th century Danish bacteriologist.1
- Actinobacteria and the Firmicutes are the two main groups of gram-positive bacteria.2
- Bacteria are either round or rod shaped.
