Research Notes on Good Cholesterol Foods
High-density lipoproteins (HDL), also called good cholesterol, should be increased to optimal levels to prevent the development of heart disease. To increase good cholesterol in the body, trans fatty acids and saturated fats should be eliminated from the diet. Increased intake of foods rich in soluble fiber, omega-3, fish oil, and niacin also increases HDL. A study showed that for every 1% increase in HDL, there is a 2% decrease in low-density lipoproteins (LDL). LDL cholesterol is considered to be 'bad' cholesterol since it increases the risk of heart disease.
