Research Notes on Glucosamine and Pregnancy
The safety of using glucosamine during pregnancy is unknown. Limited clinical studies have been performed and the recommendation is not to use this medication during pregnancy. Glucosamine is an herbal supplement used to treat symptoms of arthritis.1 Consult a health care professional if you are pregnant or intend to be pregnant prior to glucosamine administration.

- The most common type of glucosamine is glucosamine sulfate.2
- Glucosamine is commonly taken in combination with chondroitin.1
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not evaluated or approved glucosamine.3
- Individuals with shellfish allergy or iodine hypersensitivity should use caution prior to taking glucosamine. It may contain the shells of shrimp, crab, and other shellfish.3
