Research Notes on Glucosamine Hydrochloride
Glucosamine hydrochloride is a dietary supplement that is used to treat different types of arthritis, and osteoarthritis in particular.1 It is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, so check with a physician before taking glucosamine hydrochloride.2 Pregnant women and those with a glucosamine or shellfish allergy should not take this supplement. Those taking herbal supplements or suffering from diabetes or arthritis, should consult a doctor before using glucosamine hydrochloride.3
Fast Facts:
- Other names for glucosamine hydrochloride include: 2-amino-2-deoxyglucose hydrochloride, D-glucosamine HCl, glucosamine, glucosamine HCl, glucosamine KCl and glucosamine-6-phosphate.4
- Seashells are the main ingredient in glucosamine; the hydrochloride is the salt in the supplement.4
- Consult a doctor immediately if any of these side effects begin while taking glucosamine hydrochloride: constipation, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, or diarrhea.2
