Glucosamine hydrochloride is a dietary supplement that is used to treat different types of arthritis, and osteoarthritis in particular.1 It is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, so check with a physician before taking glucosamine hydrochloride.2 Pregnant women and those with a glucosamine or shellfish allergy should not take this supplement. Those taking herbal supplements or suffering from diabetes or arthritis, should consult a doctor before using glucosamine hydrochloride.3

  • Seashells are the main ingredient in glucosamine; the hydrochloride is the salt in the supplement.4
