Research Notes on Glucometer
A glucometer, also known as a glucose meter or glucose monitor, is a device that measures the amount of glucose in the blood.1 The results of the glucometer can help the health care provider ensure the patient is receiving the right treatment.2 In the 1980s, Bayer marketed Glucometer and Roche released Accu-chek to the commercial market for home glucose monitoring.1
Fast Facts:
- Glucometers are recommended for individuals with diabetes, hyperglycemia, and hypoglycemia.1
- There are over 25 different types of glucose meters manufactured.3
- Testing time varies with different monitors, generally between 3 to 60 seconds.1
- Routine quality control checks should be done to ensure the glucometer is properly working.3
