Research Notes on Glomerular Disease
Glomerular disease is a kidney disease that involves damage to the glomeruli. The glomeruli are structures in the kidneys that supply blood to the small units in the kidneys that filter urine, called the nephrons. During glomerulonephritis, the glomeruli become inflamed and impair the kidney's ability to filter waste and excess fluid from urine.
Fast Facts:
- Can be part of a systemic disease, such as lupus or diabetes, or it can be a disease by itself
- Can be acute (a sudden attack of inflammation) or chronic (comes on gradually)
- Also called glomerulonephritis, nephritis or nephrotic syndrome
