Research Notes on Tourette Syndrome

Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements such as twitching, blinking, or making guttural sounds. These are known as "tics." People with TS have little control over these movements.

Fast Facts:

  • Many people with Tourette syndrome have other neurobehavioral problems including inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity (such as ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.1
  • Many people with Tourette syndrome also have problems with depression or anxiety disorders.1
  • Tourette syndrome can be difficult to diagnose as the symptoms can come and go and may be suppressed during examinations or mistakenly attributed to psychological or behavioral problems.2
