Research Notes on Getting the Most Out of Psychotherapy

One of the best ways to ensure you are getting the most out of your psychotherapy sessions is to certain that you view your relationship with your therapist as a partnership. Take time after each session to think about what was said during your therapy, and pay close attention to the emotions you experience. It is vitally important that you communicate openly and honestly with your therapist if you hope to fully benefit from the therapy.1

Fast Facts:

  • Should you disagree with your therapist, feel upset or offended, or simply do not understand, you should voice your feelings and concerns.2
  • Be certain to stick to your treatment plan. If you have reservations about your sessions, discuss these feelings. You may find that your therapist can help you feel more at ease, or you may need to find a different therapist that may be a better fit.3
  • It's important to do any homework your therapist requests of you between appointments. Although the results of therapy are never quickly apparent, refusing to do the homework your therapist asks of you can only serve to delay your treatment and prolong the period of time before the benefits are felt.3
