Research Notes on Getting Help for a Suicidal Person
Most people who commit, or attempt to commit, suicide have a mental or emotional disorder; up to 70% suffer from major depression.1 A report by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 90% of all suicides occur during or following a depressive episode. The key to prevention is awareness, education, and treatment.2
Fast Facts:
- Eight out of ten suicidal persons give some warning sign of their intentions.1
- Reinforce emotional ties; a tiny thread may be all that holds this individual in the world.3
- Take suicide seriously. Remember that suicidal behavior is a cry for help. Listen. Do not leave an acutely suicidal person alone. Urge then to get professional help.4
