Research Notes on Gestational Diabetes Insipidus

Gestational diabetes insipidus occurs only during pregnancy when an enzyme produced by the placenta causes a deficiency of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in the mother. Diabetes insipidus is characterized by strong thirst and an abnormally increased urine output.1 It is also called gestagenic diabetes insipidus and can also occur during pregnancy if the pituitary is slightly damaged. In rare cases, gestational diabetes insipidus is caused by an abnormality in the thirst mechanism. Gestational diabetes insipidus often disappears four to six weeks after delivery.2

Fast Facts:

  • Gestational diabetes insipidus usually occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy.3
  • If gestational diabetes insipidus is developed during a pregnancy, it is very likely to occur during subsequent pregnancies.4
  • To test for diabetes insipidus, your doctor may test your urine for water content, test your blood, or give you a water deprivation test.5
