Research Notes on Gestational Diabetes Complications

Complications from gestational diabetes can include delivery problems caused by a large baby, later development of diabetes, higher risk of newborn death, and low blood glucose or illness in the newborn.1 This type of diabetes does not cause birth defects in the baby. Risk factors of gestational diabetes include having a family history of diabetes, if the mother is over the age of 25, if the mother is obese, and if the mother has previously given birth to a very large infant, a stillbirth, or a child with a birth defect.2

Fast Facts:

  • Gestational diabetes is often diagnosed by a glucose screening test between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.2
  • The mother may have low blood sugar after the birth.3
  • The risk of developing preeclampsia is higher with gestational diabetes.3
