Research Notes on Geriatric Depression Scale
The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) is a 30 question screening tool used to identify elderly depression. It is used routinely as a part of a comprehensive geriatric assessment.1 The GDS is not intended to replace clinical diagnosis by a mental health professional.2
Fast Facts:
- Yes or no questions are used, enabling simplicity for ill or moderately cognitively impaired individuals.3
- Usually, a score of 10 or below differentiates depressed patients from those considered nondepressed.1
- The GDS was developed in 1982, by J. A. Yesavitch and colleagues.2
- In 1986 a shorter version was developed, picking 15 of the most relevant questions.2
