Research Notes on Genital Herpes Treatment
When genital herpes is first diagnosed a course of antiviral medication is prescribed. This treatment is used to help heal and prevent sores from getting worse. With recurrent outbreaks, treatment should be started at the first sign of symptoms. If outbreaks occur often, antiviral medication may be prescribed for daily use.1

- Initial treatment is typically 7 to 10 days long.1
- 2 to 5 days of treatment is normally used for recurrent outbreaks.1
- Treatment does not cure genital herpes.1
