Research Notes on Genetics
Genetics is the science of variation and heredity in living organisms. Through genetics and modern science, individuals are now able to find out if they are predisposed to certain conditions, find out if an unborn baby may have certain diseases, or plan their own families based on genetic information.
Fast Facts:
- The study of genetics began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-nineteenth century.
- It is estimated there are 20,000-25,000 genes in the human genome.
- A DNA molecule is a twisted ladder-like stack of building blocks called nucleotides.
- There are four types of DNA nucleotides: adenine, cystosine, guanine and thymine, or A, C, G and T for short.
- The sequence of nucleotides in DNA is used by cells to produce specific sequences of amino acids, creating proteins a correspondence known as the genetic code.
