Genetic testing can be used to diagnose a current condition, or to see if someone is predisposed to acquiring certain diseases. Genetic testing can be done through a doctor's office, or it can be done with an at home kit, referred to as Direct to Consumer genetic testing.
Fast Facts:
- Prenatal testing is used to detect genetic or chromosomal disorders before birth.
- Newborn screening is used by parents and doctors to identify genetic disorders that can be treated early in life.
- Diagnostic testing is used to identify or rule out a specific genetic or chromosomal condition, often when a particular condition is suspected based on physical signs and symptoms.
- Carrier testing is used to identify people who carry one copy of a gene mutation that, when present in two copies, causes a genetic disorder.
- Predictive and presymptomatic testing can be helpful to people who have a family member with a genetic disorder.
- Forensic testing uses DNA to identify an individual for legal purposes.
