Research Notes on Genes Hold New Clues to Autism
Researchers have recently announced that they have discovered gene variations that are believed to increase the risk of a child developing autism or an autistic disorder. A gene variation was present in about 65% of children who have been diagnosed with an autistic disorder. Although not an immediate cure or treatment method, scientists believe the breakthrough to be substantial in the regard that understanding the condition will inevitably lead to better methods of treatment.1
Fast Facts:
- Researchers now believe that proteins in the brain play a key role in the development of autism.2
- It is believed that children born with this gene variant have a 15%-20% increased risk of developing autism verses children who don't have the variation.3
- While approximately 60% of children with autism do not have the gene variant, researchers believe that finding a common link between many children who do will lead to further breakthroughs.3
