Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, acid reflux, and heartburn) is a condition in which the contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus. Inflammation and damage of the esophagus lining occurs during the reflux. As a result, those with GERD may have a burning sensation throughout the chest and throat.1
