Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure that makes the stomach smaller, thereby decreasing the amount of food that can be stored there. Many people who have this surgery quickly begin losing weight, and usually continue to lose for up to 12 months.

  • Most common gastric bypass surgery is Roux-en-Y.
  • Gastric bypass surgery allows food to bypass part of the small intestine.
  • This surgery can be done by a large incision, or a small incision (laparoscopic).
  • Surgery is usually considered when body mass index is 40 or higher.
  • Hospital stay averages 4 to 6 days.
  • Resuming normal activity can be done in 3 to 5 weeks.
  • Some initial weight loss may be regained.
  • On average, people lose 1/3 of their excess body weight in 1 to 4 years.
