Research Notes on GERD and Asthma

In recent years, it has been discovered that there is a strong link between GERD (gastroesophogeal reflux disease) and asthma. As many as 70 percent of people with asthma suffer from GERD, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. With GERD, the acid from the stomach reaches the esophagus. GERD also seems to increase the sensitivity of the airways, worsening asthma symptoms.1

Fast Facts:

  • People with asthma are twice as likely to suffer from GERD as those without asthma.2
  • Treating GERD often helps relieve the symptoms of asthma.2
  • You may have both GERD and asthma if you have increased asthma symptoms after eating, exercising, or when lying down, frequent coughing, or hoarsness or asthma that does not respond to standard asthma treatments.3
