Research Notes on GERD Treatment
Treatment for GERD is aimed at preventing more damage and to allow healing by reducing back flow of the stomach acids into the esophagus. Treatment is also directed towards prevention of reoccurrence of GERD and prevention of other conditions that can be caused by complications of GERD. Treatment for mild GERD begins with lifestyle changes and over the counter antacids. Frequent or severe GERD typically requires lifestyle changes and prescription medications. Medications used to treat GERD usually include proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers. Fundoplication surgery may be an option in some cases.1
Fast Facts:
- Once GERD develops, it is usually a life long condition.1
- Spicy or fatty foods, chocolate, drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol are examples of things that can make symptoms worse.1
- May have to try different medications and dosages to find what works best.1
