GERD Causes

GERD may be caused by several things. In many patients, the lower esophageal sphincter has problems with abnormally weak contractions or abnormal relaxations that are not timed correctly and last too long. When the esophageal sphincter has these problems, stomach acid can wash back into the esophagus. The lining of the esophagus is irritated by the stomach acid. Over time, this erodes the esophagus, causing bleeding and possible narrowing.1

Fast Facts:

  • In some cases, a hiatal hernia is related to the cause of GERD.2
  • About 20% of those with GERD have been found to have a slow to empty stomach.2
  • Though rare, some patients with GERD have been found to produce abnormally large amounts of acid.2
