Functional cysts are benign (non-cancerous), fluid-filled cysts that grow as part of the natural function of the ovaries. A follicle cyst is a cyst that develops during ovulation, and a luteal cyst is one that forms when the corpus luteum fails to disintegrate in a woman who is not pregnant. Most functional cysts do not cause symptoms and most go away without treatment.
