Frontal Temporal Dementia (FTD) is an umbrella term referring to various disorders that affect the frontal and temporal sections of the human brain. These are the sections of the brain that govern personality and behavior.

Fast Facts About Frontal Temporal Dementia

Symptoms can be classified basically into two groups: Behavioural symptoms (personality change) and executive function. Behavioural symptoms include apathy; socially withdrawn people who stay in bed all day or no longer take care of themselves. Executive function is the cognitive skill of organizing and planning- patients are unable to perform tasks which require complex planning or sequencing.

There is no treatnment for FTD. Supportive care is critical; as management of behavioural symptoms may be necessary.

Since FTD often strikes in the mid years ( 40'2 to 50's) it can be devastating to a family- as this is often the time in life where the person is the top wage earner in the home.
