Research Notes on Framingham Cardiac Risk Calculator
The Framingham cardiac risk calculator is used to determine your 10 year risk of having a heart attack. The National Heart Institute, now the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, began a study in 1948 on risk factors that may contribute to cardiovascular disease.1 This study took place in Framingham, Massachusetts, and led to the Framingham cardiac risk calculator.2 The calculator needs certain input about your health, age, gender, total cholesterol level, HDL cholesterol, if you smoke, and your systolic blood pressure. The calculator also has an input for whether or not you are on blood pressure medication.3 After entering this information, you will get your risk of having a heart attack within the next 10 years.
Fast Facts:
- The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute has been collaborating with Boston University on this project since 1971.2
- In the original study the participants where overwhelmingly white, and race and ethnicity are a factor in heart disease.1
- At the University of Bristol in the UK, they have developed their own calculator for their minority groups.1
