Research Notes on Foods to Avoid on a Cardiac Diet

It is important to limit foods high in cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fat when on a cardiac diet. Avoid foods high in saturated fats including whole milk, egg yolk, cream, butter, cheese, stick margarine, and red meat. Limit foods that list “partially hydrogenated” or “fully hydrogenated” oils as an ingredient.1 Trans fats are found in foods containing shortening and/or partially hydrogenated oils. These ingredients are usually found in commercially prepared baked goods such as pies, doughnuts, pastries, cakes, and cookies.2 Limit sodium by reducing salt in your diet. Avoid high sodium condiments like soy sauce, mustard, ketchup, and barbecue sauce.

Fast Facts:

  • Avoid canned meats, soups, and vegetables, and bagged chips as they are high in sodium.
  • Limit the consumption of coconut and avocado as both are high in fat.
  • Avoid eating at fast food restaurants as the foods are typically fried or cooked in unhealthy oils.
  • Processed luncheon meats, sausage, and bacon are high in saturated fat and should be avoided.
  • It is recommended to eliminate or reduce caffeine while on a cardiac diet.
  • Avoid eating white flour.3
