Research Notes on Food Allergy Reactions
Food allergies can occur suddenly, or there can be a delayed reaction once the substance has been ingested.1 The most common signs and symptoms of a food allergy include: tingling in the mouth, hives, swelling of the tongue, lips, throat and face, wheezing and abdominal pain.1 Severe allergic reactions may have signs of constricted airways, shock, severely low blood pressure, a rapid pulse and fainting.1
Fast Facts:
- Emergency treatment is critical in severe food reactions.1
- Some food allergies are outgrown from childhood, but allergies to foods like peanuts, fish and shellfish often last a lifetime.2
- Only about 1% of adults and 3% of children have a true food allergy.3
