Research Notes on Flu Vaccines

The flu vaccine is recommended for people at a high risk for serious complications from influenza virus infection. Healthy adults aged 19 to 49 who do not have high risk conditions and who are in contact with immunocompromised people can receive either the inactivated intramuscular vaccine or the weakened live virus nasal spray vaccine.1

Fast Facts:

  • The vaccine was created in the 1950's but was not widely used until the 1990's.2
  • There are 2 types of flu vaccines; the flu shot and the nasal influenza vaccine. The flu shot does not contain the live virus, whereas the nasal vaccine contains weakened viruses.3
  • Side effects of the vaccine (shot) may include fever, fatigue, sore muscles, and headache. These tend to last up to 2 days.4
