Research Notes on Flu Types

There are three basic types of flu viruses: A, B, and C. Influenza A is divided into subtypes based upon two proteins found on the virus itself: hemagglutinin (H) and the neuraminidase (N). The flu pandemic of 1918 was an A type flu.1 A-type influenza affects both animals and humans. B-types affect only humans. A and B cause the majority of the flu seen today, although there is a C type, which is much less severe.2

Fast Facts:

  • It wasn't until the 1931 that the first flu virus was identified by Richard Schope.3
  • Each year flu vaccine is designed to fight type A and B flu strains.1
  • There are no vaccines for a pandemic flu, because until the flu virus appears and is identified, no one knows exactly what to vaccinate against.4
  • According to the Singapore government, the best way to avoid bird flu (caused by H5N 1 virus) is to avoid handling poultry, consuming undercooked poultry, and birds used in cockfighting.4
