Research Notes on Flu Treatment

There is no cure for the flu. Treatment is meant to ease symptoms. Over the counter antihistamines, decongestants, cough suppressants or expectorants may be helpful for a runny nose, nasal congestion or cough. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen is usually recommended if a fever develops.1

Fast Facts:

  • Antibiotics cannot treat the flu, but may be needed if a secondary infection develops
  • In some cases, an antiviral medication may be prescribed at the onset of symptoms
  • The use of antihistamines may not be recommended for people with certain lung conditions such as asthma.1
