Research Notes on Flu Prevention
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that most people get the flu vaccine each year. If you have already been exposed, antiviral medication may be prescribed. This is not as effective or a substitute for the vaccine. Antivirals can make a person less contagious and less likely to develop complications. Good health habits can be helpful. Simple steps such as avoiding close contact with those who are sick and washing your hands often can go a long way in helping to prevent the flu.1
Fast Facts:
- If you have the flu, you should stay home to help prevent spreading the virus.1
- A person remains contagious for about 5 days once they are ill.
- The flu virus can be spread for up to 2 days before symptoms appear.2
