Research Notes on Flu Complications

Flu complications usually appear after a brief period of improvement.1 Pneumonia is a common, yet serious complication.2 You may start to feel better and suddenly develop symptoms such as high fever, chills, pain when breathing, and coughing that produces thick, yellow-greenish-colored mucus.1 Other possible complications include muscle inflammation (myositis), infections of the central nervous system, pericarditis, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, or worsening of chronic medical conditions.2

Fast Facts:

  • Reye's syndrome is a possible complication that can develop in some children after taking aspirin.1
  • Adults over 50, children 6 months to 4 years, pregnant women, nursing home residents, people with heart or lung disease or a compromised immune system are at highest risk of developing flu complications.2
  • According to the CDC, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized due to flu complications annually.2
