Research Notes on Flu
The flu is a contagious disease infecting the nose, throat, and lungs. It is caused by the influenza virus that affects birds and mammals. Influenza can cause pneumonia, which can be serious and even fatal, especially in young children and the elderly. Influenza is different from the common cold. It is caused by a different type of virus and has a more severe course.1
Fast Facts:
- Wash your hands often. One of the most common ways people catch colds and the flu is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated with a virus.2
- Flu symptoms are similar to the common cold including runny nose, sneezing, and sore throat.3
- Antiviral medications may help shorten the length of symptoms if the flu is diagnosed within 48 hours of when symptoms begin.4
