Research Notes on Flexeril and Breastfeeding

The excretion of Flexeril into breast milk has not been adequately studied. It is generally recommended breastfeeding women not take Flexeril, as all of the risks are not known. Based on its chemical structure Flexeril is likely to pass through breast milk. Cyclobenzaprine, the generic name for Flexeril, is related to tricyclic antidepressants, and some of these drugs do appear in breast milk.1 If your physician says it is safe to take Flexeril while breastfeeding, watch for any changes or side effects in your child.

Fast Facts:

  • It is important to consult your physician before beginning to take Flexeril when breastfeeding.
  • The medication is likely to cause side effects, such as drowsiness, in breastfed infants.2
  • If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until treatment is complete.3
  • Flexeril should only be used for a short period of time of no more than three weeks.
